Teach children how to parent in a non-violent manner

Every child should learn how to be a good parent—how to bond with a baby and be responsive—and how to parent in a non-violent manner. An example of this type of programme is provided by Roots of Empathy. We can all help with this—in our own families and in schools, at clinics and in faith-based groups or wherever services are offered to children. .

Give all first-time parents supportive coaching

Give all first-time parents supportive coaching, during pregnancy, on how to 'attune' with babies Parenting programmes like these, especially for teenage mothers and others at risk, are envisaged in the Childrens’ Act and we all need to lobby to have them funded and organized! During a first pregnancy, give every mother- and father-to-be supportive coaching on how to 'attune' with babies, how to ensure the child's successful emotional development and how to parent in a non-violent manner. An example of this type of support is offered by the programme First Steps in Parenting (details from the programme developer Dr Mel Parr, or by e-mailing WAVE) .

Regular monitoring visits by specially trained Health Visitors

Regular monitoring visits by specially trained Health Visitors for all babies in 'at risk' families An important part of the parenting programme would be monitoring visits as a matter of routine in 'at risk' families during the first three years of children’s lives, when specially trained Health Visitors would provide practical encouragement and support. An example of what could be provided can be seen via the Nurse Family Partnership. Note that many young mothers suffer from depression and cannot relate well to their infants without support. .

Recognise and treat emotional problems in children

Early detection and treatment of emotional disorders, including excess aggression, is important as the young brain is more ’plastic’ and treatment is more successful at an early age. Unfortunately mental health is low on the public agenda being a low political priority and poorly understood and valued by the public [22]. Furthermore, stigmatization of mental illness among policymakers may deter them from taking up mental health issues.

    • Success in meeting our children’s changing needs, through responsive education programmes, new treatments and partnerships

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the Yezingane Network website. As a network that is dedicated to collaboration, co-ordination and communication of the Children Sector network.
Put Children First, this what President Nelson Mandela had in mind, when he became the President of the Republic of South Africa in 1994. The Yezingane Network aims to put Children First in our work. We have a great constitution in South Africa, we have great policies for children in the country, but we still continue to fail in our responses. We need to be a network that does more action than talk.
Let us continue to build this network as we serve for the best interests of Children, and for us as members to participate actively in the various levels of Corporate Governance structures.
Let us implement the NSP 2012 - 2016 for the sake of children -

let's make it happen. Ke Nako - Now is the time.

It's all about children's rights

Children’s rights is a very wide topic as it touches on every aspect of children’s lives. In summary, children have the right to survival and protection and the right to develop to their full potential. They also have the right and responsibility to help build a better world in partnership with adults.
On this website you can find information on children’s rights including:

  • Policy and laws that uphold children’s rights, such as the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, the United Nation’s Convention on the Rights of the Child, the South African Bill of Rights, and others.
  • Resources, news, and advocacy campaigns on particular issues affecting children such as education, family life, discipline, poverty, violence, HIV/AIDS, disability, and many others.
  • The voice of children themselves especially in the photo-documentary “Visions & Voices: Children’s Rights & Realities”.

You can also find information about the Children's Rights Centre, our work and publications.

Your role in protecting the rights of children

Most children get the support they need to grow up secure, healthy and independent. But not always. Some children are abused or neglected. The harm they suffer can last a lifetime. Whether we are relatives  of children, or just ordinary citizens, we all have a role in ensuring the safety and well-being of children. If you think a child - any child - is being abused or neglected you must report the case to the police, organizations which endeavour to protect children, or the Ministry for welfare of children. There are various helplines which you could call. If you think that legislation, green papers or organizational rules threaten - or do not support - the rights of children, make your voice heard.
